The most frequently asked questions...

Q If I miss out on enrolling in a course in January, can I start at the beginning of the next term?

You can enrol and start on a course on any day right through the year.

Do the courses run the same dates and times as the school or is it 9 to 5 every day like a real job?

As our courses are a transition into work, we are sort of midway between; On a daily basis the programme starts at 9am and finishes about 3.30pm. The Youth2xcel year starts from late January, we close for Christmas in mid December. We are closed on all the statutory holidays and also for 2 weeks holiday in July. We also have a couple of Staff-only days in the year, which are either a Monday or a Friday, so the students get an extra long weekend.

What qualifications do I need to get onto a course?

A None at all, however you may be too qualified if you have NCEA level 2 or higher.

Q  How much classroom stuff and homework and assignments will I have to do on one of your courses?

A Our courses are especially tailored for people who haven’t done well in school and haven’t enjoyed their classroom experiences. We aim to make learning fun and relevant. Therefore there are no assignments and no homework. The unit standards are achieved mainly through practical hands-on learning, In order to pass the unit standards there is a minimal amount of written work required. The students do this together, and with the Tutors help.

Q How much does it cost and can we pay it off weekly?

A The courses and activities are all free. There is nothing for you to pay. The funding comes from the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission. If you live out of the area and rely on public transport to get you to the course, we can apply on your behalf for a travel allowance to assist you with travel costs.

Q Do i get paid to come if i join one of your courses?

A No, but if you are eligible to join a course you may also be eligible for financial assistance from Work and Income New Zealand if you require it.

Q Would I have to wear a Uniform?

A  No, but you’ll need sensible clothing and footwear suitable for the course you are on.

 Q What if I get a job, but it’s not full-time?

A  You can still come to course on the days you’re not working. The practical skills you learn at your place of employment may help towards your unit standards.

Q Do you do other stuff or just mostly course work?

A  We do heaps of fun stuff every week. Check out the photo pages for: boating, fishing, picnics and barbecues, sports days and tournaments with other Training Providers and lots more fun stuff.
