Servant Industries Trust

The History of
Servant Industries and YOUTH2XCEL...

Servant Industries Trust began as an initiative of Kapiti Christian Centre in 1984 when unemployment was on the rise and many people were finding it difficult to gain employment. A market garden type scheme was set up to teach horticulture skills, growing vegetables and selling them locally.

Shortly after that, the Lake family made their land in central Paraparaumu available for farming use. Some of the Mongrel Mob members joined the project and later de-patched as they saw there was a better lifestyle to be had. Towards the end of the 1980’s when the stock market crash began impacting our community, the focus of Servant Industries changed. New courses were introduced to help men and women in the 40-50 age group to retrain, having lost their jobs in the post-crash downsizing of large corporations and businesses.

This proved very successful and a carpentry course and sewing course began. In 1995 Servant Industries entered a new phase, being registered as a Private Training Provider by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. This enabled them to offer courses with unit standards. Work based training courses were also added but as the unemployment level dropped significantly, there was not such a demand for adult courses. Drastic changes were needed for Servant Industries to continue. In the year 2002 Servant Industries was re-launched with it’s new focus on youth, and we adopted the name...

This new focus proved successful and we concentrated on Hospitality and Farming activities and transition to work. At the end of 2005 a new farm tutor joined the staff with a larger and more diverse farm, enabling us to expand even further. In October 2009 we celebrated Servant Industries Trust’s 25th Anniversary.

At the beginning of 2011 a new course began. The START course which took over from the Kapiti Centre of Learning. This course works closely with the 2 local colleges.

Today we continue to assist young people to make good life choices and see them take the first steps into further training or the career path of their choice. We are a valuable part of our local community, providing a positive example for the youth.
