    Hospitality

This course is based at our Centre in Raumati South where we have a large workable kitchen with modern appliances. The course includes hands on cooking, meal planning, budgeting, dietary requirements, food hygiene and presentation, waiting on tables, espresso coffee making and much more. We work towards an annual dinner which is both a ‘thank you’ to those in our community who support YOUTH2XCEL, and an opportunity to plan and prepare a meal on a grand scale. We cook a balanced meal for lunch most days and assist with catering and serving on a smaller scale at local functions. This course has traditionally been more popular with girls but guys are by no means exempt.

    Farm and the Outdoors

The practical side of this course is run from a workable farm in the Reikorangi Valley near Waikanae. We run sheep, deer and cattle so students get hands on experience with drenching, dagging, rounding up the stock, animal husbandry, lambing, docking, shearing, and the deer velvet industry. We cover fencing, building, hay making, and the buying and selling of stock. There is opportunity to learn to work and maintain the farm equipment including the tractor and quad bike and many other regular farm tasks. The Students have also had opportunity to help out people in our local community with things like tree felling, house moving, stacking firewood and clearing away debris after the Paekakariki floods of 2004.  This course tends to attract mainly boys but girls are welcome on the course too.
